Each four week section is organized around a theme and includes fiction and nonfiction passages. Over the course of the year the passages cover a variety of genres: informational text, fable, biography, myth, folktale, tall tale, etc. All of it is common core aligned. The students read a fiction story about going on a roller coaster, an informational text about the first roller coasters, a fiction piece about being too short for a ride, and a nonfiction piece about ride safety, fluency homework.

The students are asked to find similarities and differences among the different passages. Under the core, students are supposed to read fluency homework from various cultures and point out their theme. The kids get a kick out of these, too! Also a folktale from Tibet and a story of Brer Rabbit. This is part of our weekly homework. On Mondays I distribute the story to the class.

I read it to them while they follow along with their plastic witch finger you have to make them follow along or about half of them drift off. Then we choral read it as a class and complete the comprehension questions together.

The pages is set up to make this run as smoothly as possible for mom and dad. The main focus is, of course, fluency homework, the story. Love this packet…I purchased it in January or so of this past school year and used it each week just like you. I did notice a jump in fluency with the kids ending DRA test scores. The parents and kids liked it so much better that the weekly reading log. I had several passages left over at the end of the year since we started in the middle of the year so I sent them home for summer reading!

With DIBELS, students are required to answer comprehension questions after an initial often partial reading of a text, so I need them to get used to the idea of reading first with comprehension in mind. Is the first grade fluency in the process. I am moving to first and loved using the 2nd grade version for homework. If so, when would you be releasing????
